Three common questions about Social Security Disability Insurance

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a program that is designed to offer financial assistance to those with certain disabilities that are unable to work. In order to qualify, applicants must meet certain requirements.

What are the requirements? A recent publication in The Motley Fool discussed these benefits, noting that they are designed to help those who are unable to work. In order to qualify, the applicant must have what the Social Security Administration (SSA) considers a disability. This disability must prevent the applicant from working and must generally be expected to last at least a year.

It is also important to note that simply not being able to do your current job is generally not enough to receive approval for these benefits. In most cases, the agency will review whether or not the applicant can do any other form of work. If another form of work is an option, the agency may deny benefits.

How do I apply for these benefits? The application process involves the use of an application form as well as certain medical records. Your health service providers and physicians may be contacted and you may need to receive an additional exam.

Do I need an attorney? In many cases, it is best to seek legal counsel when applying for these benefits. Denials are not uncommon and can be fought. If your initial application is denied an appeal may still result in benefits.
