Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) - 2018 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA)

In October of 2017, the government announced information important to Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and SSI recipients, as well as Social Security retirees. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and SSI recipients will see a 2.0% increase in benefits for the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) starting in January of 2018. The COLA is based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from the third quarter of the current year. The COLA affects many important aspects of the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and SSI programs besides the actual amount of benefits paid to claimants. The COLA was put into place in 1975.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) - 2016 Numbers

Recently it was discussed that there will be no cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in 2016 for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and SSI beneficiaries. The COLA is important because it also sets other Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and SSI-related amounts for 2016. For 2016 the following are amounts to remember:

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) - No COLA!

Recipients of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits will not see a benefit increase in 2016!  Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and SSI recipients saw a 1.7% increase in benefits in 2015. The COLA is based on the Consumer Price Index from the third quarter of the current year.  This is only the third time in the history of the program that a cost of living adjustment has not occurred.  The low price of gasoline seems to be the consensus culprit.  It ignores the fact though that food prices continue to soar and this directly impacts those on a fixed income.

Social Security Disability - Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA)

Social Security Disability and SSI recipients will see a 1.7% increase in benefits due to the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) starting in January of 2015. Every year in October the government announces the COLA.  The COLA is based on the Consumer Price Index from the third quarter of the current year. The COLA affects many important aspects of the Social Security Disability and SSI program besides the actual amount of benefits paid to claimants.  In 2014, the COLA was 1.5%.  Although the annual adjustment is provided to protect the buying power of Social Security and SSI claimants, beneficiaries might actually see a big disparity between the benefit increases they receive and the increase in costs of needed items.

Social Security Disability: Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA)

Social Security Disability and SSI recipients will see a 1.5% increase in benefits for the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) starting in January of 2014. The COLA is based on the Consumer Price Index from the third quarter of the current year. The COLA affects many important aspects of the Social Security Disability and SSI program besides the actual amount of benefits paid to claimants. For instance, the amount of earnings necessary to earn a quarter of coverage (QC) increases from $1,160.00 to $1,200.00 and the tax exempt amount of retirement earnings also adjust. Social Security Disability claimants will receive a raise next year!  On Wednesday, October 19, 2011, the Social Security Administration put out a press release announcing that the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for beneficiaries will be 3.6% in 2012. This adjustment affects individuals receiving Old Age and Social Security Disability benefits. In 2011 there was no COLA.
