Tennessee has its most fatal auto accidents since 2006

On Behalf of | Jan 14, 2022 | Car Accidents |

With 2021 in the books, Tennessee agencies, researchers and road safety advocates are assessing the number of auto accidents with injuries and fatalities that occurred in the state. While taking to the road in any capacity – as a driver, passenger, motorcyclist, bicyclist or pedestrian – carries with it a certain level of risk, it is important to keep track of collisions to determine how they happened to try and prevent them. As the accidents are analyzed, it is similarly vital for people to be aware of the catalysts so they can avoid a crash. After an accident, it is also useful to know how it happened when weighing options.

Tennessee Department of Transportation discusses accidents and road safety

According to a representative from the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), the numbers for this past year are worrisome in that there were the highest number of road fatalities since 2006. With several weeks remaining in the year, TDOT stated that there had been 1,277 road deaths. At the same time two years earlier, more than 100 fewer people had died in an accident. Overall, this was the deadliest year on state roads in 15 years.

Speculation centers on current factors including a rise in people working onsite when they had been working from home; more activities available and people participating in them; and schools getting back to in-person learning. Since the holiday accident statistics were not yet available, there was concern that higher numbers of people traveling to visit family and friends as well as people attending holiday parties where alcohol was to be served might have caused another spike.

Driver behaviors were referenced with distraction and driving at excessive speeds specified. Distracted driving doubles the chance that a person will be in an accident and it is not limited to cellphone use. Onboard navigation systems, passengers and something as simple as changing the radio station can remove a person’s attention from the road and lead to an accident. Speeding increases the severity of the accident itself.

Even with vigilance and caution, accidents can still happen with terrible results

This information can be beneficial to drivers who are trying to stay safe, but the reality is that many drivers will continue to behave illegally and recklessly. Since auto accidents can cause physical, emotional, personal, professional and financial problems, it is essential to know what to do in the aftermath. For those who were injured and families who have lost a loved one, having experienced assistance can be a fundamental aspect of maximum recovery. Contacting those who understand these cases is imperative from the start.
