Tennessee is in the top 10 for odds of dying in a car accident

There are many factors that go into each car accident, so looking only at the odds doesn’t always tell the whole story. That said, the numbers can paint a picture of the dangers in any state and show you how likely it is you’ll be killed in a crash.

From that perspective, Tennessee is fairly dangerous. It ranks out right at the bottom of the top 10, at No. 10 overall.

The probability of being killed in a car accident is 1/6,529, while the probability of just being involved — taking into account those who survive — is 1/3,170.

That’s fairly dire. For the sake of comparison, the safest place to drive is Washington D.C. There, the odds of passing away in a car accident are a mere 1/32,322, while the odds of being in a deadly wreck come in at 1/14,053.

It’s also interesting to note that the total population of Tennessee is 6,495,978, and a full 4,605,100 of those individuals are licensed drivers. That’s slightly more than one car for every driver, clocking in at 1.18 vehicles for everyone with a license. The stats show that one out of each 3,894 vehicles will find its way into a deadly crash. In 2013, that meant that 995 people were killed.

Wondering about the most dangerous state? It’s Montana. The probability of being killed in a car accident is 1/4,433.

Since car accident deaths are so common in Tennessee, it’s crucial for the families of those who have been killed to know if they have a right to financial compensation for funeral costs, lost wages and more.
