Two Jefferson County Teenagers Killed on I-40 In Knoxville

Two Jefferson County teens suffer fatal personal injuries after car accident on I-40 in Knoxville, Tennessee.  On 1:01 a.m., on Thursday, October 20, 2011, Jean-Luke Lane and Joshua Allen Bullington, both eighteen from White Pine, Tennesse, died when their car crossed Interstate 40 during a pouring rain and slammed into an oncoming pickup truck. Mr. Lane was driving a 2008 Honda Accord westbound on I-40 east of the Holston River bridge during a heavy rainstorm when he lost control of the car. The car spun and then flipped onto its side before crossing the grassy median and into the eastbound lanes of traffic. The vehicle was then struck by an eastbound 2005 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Athanasios Tsarouhas of Alpharetta, Georgia. Tsarouhas was taken by ambulance to the University of the Tennessee Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. It is unknown if speed factored into the crash or whether the persons involved were using their seatbelts.

The crash forced authorities to close the eastbound lanes of I-40 for more than six hours as officers investigated the wreck. Eastbound traffic was diverted at the Asheville Highway exit ramp.
